Two zones in a 5 Class cabinet

The HBD524 is the dual-zone beverage center of the 5 Class group, 24 in wide and listed for indoor installation. Wine at cellar temperature in one section and sparkling or soft drinks colder in the other is the use case. The reason this matters in repair is that each zone depends on its own air path and sensor, so complaints are usually zone-specific.

Start with one sentence

Before anything else, try to say it in one sentence: “The lower zone will not go below 55 F even though it is set to 45 F.” That sentence includes the zone, the set point and the actual temperature, and it lets us skip a lot of guessing. Compare it with “It is not cooling,” which tells us nothing about where to begin.

Cross-talk between zones

One cabinet, two temperatures, and a partition in between. If the settings are far apart, the colder zone pulls the warmer one down and the warmer one adds heat to the colder. When people raise one zone sharply, the other can appear to misbehave. We ask about recent changes to both zones before looking deeper.

  • Did someone change the set point on either side?
  • Was one zone loaded much more heavily than the other?
  • Does one door close less firmly than the other?

Alarms with side names

Dual-zone controls name the side in the message. The code reference lists items like L Evap T Open and R Temp Hi 12H+, which describe an open evaporator sensor circuit on the left side, or a right-zone reading that overshot its target by 10 degrees F and stayed there for twelve hours. Whether your unit reports them depends on its control, and matching the message to the model is a task for us.

Indoor placement

As an indoor-only model, it belongs in conditioned rooms. A wine-and-drinks bar in a finished garage, however common in the Bay Area, is outside that listing, so we ask where it stands. Clear the grille, keep heat sources away and check that the supply is steady.

Condensation on the cabinet, a fan that sounds different, or a door that does not seat cleanly around tall bottles are worth listing as well, together with which side they show up on. Pairing each symptom with a zone saves a round of questions.
