The dual-zone option in the 5 Class group

If you wanted two serving temperatures in an indoor 5 Class cabinet, the HWD524 is the one. It is 24 inches wide, current and listed for indoor installation, like the rest of its group. Its sibling HWC524 has the same width but a single zone, so the first question we ask any HWD524 owner is which compartment is misbehaving.

Three patterns, three directions

Zone complaints tend to fall into one of three patterns, and each points us somewhere different.

  • One zone off, the other fine. Look at that side’s sensor reading, its air path and its share of the door seal.
  • Both zones off together. Suspect something common: a door that does not close, a restricted front opening, ambient heat or the cooling system.
  • Zones drifting toward each other. The separation between set points is shrinking, so we look at how the control splits the cooling.

Reading a left or right message

On the control used for dual-zone refrigeration, side-specific messages exist. L Zone T Short and R Zone T Short describe a shorted zone thermistor circuit, while L Evap T Open and R Evap T Open describe an open evaporator thermistor circuit on a side. Write the whole message down, including the letter.

What you can do before we arrive

  1. Photograph the display with both temperatures visible.
  2. List the set points you chose for each zone.
  3. Check for anything holding either door section open.
  4. Keep the front opening free of dust and storage.
  5. Do not reset power until the message has been photographed.

Seen in practice

A familiar scenario goes like this. The owner raises the red zone a few degrees for a dinner, and a day later the white zone is no longer as cold as it was. Part of that is normal, because the compartments share a cabinet. If the white zone stays off after the red zone has settled again, the sensors and airflow need a proper look.

Why model-exact parts matter here

Dual-zone cabinets carry extra sensors and a control that has to manage two compartments. Even inside the same 5 Class family, the HWD524 should not be handled as an HWC524 with a divider. We confirm the model and tag before ordering parts, which avoids the all-too-common situation where a part arrives that physically fits but does not belong.

How the visit goes

We start with each zone’s set point and door sealing, move to airflow and the fan, evaluate the zone sensors and control logic, and then review the refrigeration system. A written estimate follows, and repairs begin only with your approval. Compare with the HWC524 or see the other two-zone options, the URWD424 and the 36-inch 3036WCWC. Our U-Line wine refrigerator repair page covers the category in general.
