Watch one cycle before you call

The OCR115 is a 15 in crescent ice maker from U-Line’s Outdoor collection, intended for outdoor installation. A crescent machine makes ice in stages: it takes in water, freezes a batch, releases it into the bin and starts over. A bin that stays empty could mean the machine stalls at any one of those stages, so the best clue you can give us is where the cycle stops.

Stand near the unit for a full cycle if you can and note what you hear and see. You do not need to open anything, and you should not.

Stage by stage

  • If no water ever seems to arrive, the supply side is the first place to look.
  • If a batch freezes but never drops into the bin, the trouble is in release.
  • If the machine runs but the batch never completes, we look at freezing and sensing.
  • If cubes come out small or ragged, the supply or the freeze timing may be off.
  • If frost builds somewhere it did not before, note where.

What outdoors adds

An outdoor unit lives with heat, wind-blown dust and in some neighborhoods salt air. At the coast, in the fog belt of the Sunset or Outer Richmond, a patio unit collects a film on its vents that an indoor machine never would. In inland East Bay summers the opposite applies, with high ambient temperatures making the machine work harder. In both cases, keep the ventilation opening clear and wipe the outside of the cabinet.

Outdoor plumbing is another weak point. A supply line that runs along a deck or through a fence can be pinched, and a valve that was closed for a repair elsewhere is easy to forget.

Checks you can make

  1. Keep the ventilation opening free of leaves, boxes and covers.
  2. Check that the ice bin sits in its normal position and nothing is wedged in it.
  3. Confirm that water is available to the unit and the visible shutoff is open.
  4. Note whether the machine begins a batch, freezes it and releases it.
  5. Record any leak, unusual frost or control indication.

Avoid bending the internal water lines or ice-making parts while looking inside. They are easy to damage.

After a power interruption

An outdoor outlet on a GFCI circuit can trip after rain or an irrigation cycle. If the machine stopped after a trip, reset the GFCI as you normally would and give the unit time to start a cycle before deciding anything else. If the sensing or control acts oddly afterward, tell us what you saw.

Next step

If the ice-making sequence still does not finish, reach out on our contact page. A written estimate follows the diagnosis and you decide what goes ahead. Background reading includes U-Line ice maker repair, and anything shown on the display can be looked up in the U-Line error code archive.
