A clear ice machine that drains by gravity

Product data for the HCL115 covers versions shipped with no drain pump at all. In plain terms, water leaving the machine has to flow down a line to a drain at a lower point, with nothing helping it along. If the drain line sags, is clamped by a cabinet corner or connects to a fitting that sits too high, the machine will complain long before any internal part has failed.

The HCL115 is a 15-inch machine in the 1 Class family, designed for indoor installation. Do not confuse it with the HCP115, which is the pump-equipped sibling that U-Line markets alongside it; the two need different checks.

Clear ice, a step at a time

Clear ice results from fill, circulation, controlled freezing, harvest and drain. When it fails, the question is which stage stops. These are the common stories:

  • the cubes turn cloudy or thin;
  • the machine fills but never completes a batch;
  • water spills at the drain connection after the harvest;
  • daily ice output falls steadily;
  • the bin stays empty although the machine appears to cycle.

Where a gravity drain goes wrong

In a kitchen remodel, drain lines are often rerouted. A line that used to fall steadily may now rise to meet a trap, hold a pool of water or kink behind a drawer. Owners can often see part of that line under the sink or near the connection. If you can see it, look for a low sag or a flattened section without disconnecting anything.

Checks you can do

  1. Confirm that the water shutoff is open and the supply line is straight.
  2. Check the bin and the space around the visible drain for standing water.
  3. Note at which stage water leaks, if it does.
  4. Photograph the drain route where it is visible.
  5. Keep any cleaning reminder or message as it was displayed.

Which codes may apply

Time to Clean asks for cleaning of the water circulation system. 11 reports a high water level in the tray or reservoir, and 12 a low level. Pump-related codes such as P1 would not be expected on a machine without a pump, and if one appears it is a reason to double-check the exact model on the tag.

What we do

We follow water supply, circulation and freezing, the harvest sequence, the gravity drain path, then sensors, controls and refrigeration. A written estimate precedes any repair, and you approve it first. The pump-equipped HCP115 and crescent HCR115 are sister models; the U-Line ice maker repair page has the general overview.
