Crescent ice in a 15-inch cabinet

The HCR115 makes crescent-shaped ice, the familiar curved cubes of a traditional cube machine, in a 15-inch undercounter body. It sits in U-Line’s 1 Class group, which mixes crescent, clear, craft clear and nugget machines along with refrigerator combinations, so the model number is what tells you which family of troubleshooting applies. A crescent machine is not diagnosed like the clear-ice HCL115 beside it.

The four stages that matter

A crescent-ice machine depends on water supply, freeze timing, temperature sensing and harvest or release. A fault in each stage has its own look:

  • no water fill leaves a dry tray and no batch at all;
  • a freeze that is too short or too long produces thin or oversized cubes;
  • a sensing problem can end the freeze early or never end it;
  • a release problem leaves ice stuck to the evaporator while the cycle repeats.

Low output versus no ice

If production has gradually fallen to half of what it was, the machine is still completing cycles, just poorly. If the bin has been empty for a day, something stops the cycle outright. Those are different diagnoses, and we ask which one you are seeing. Observing a full cycle before parts are replaced is the best way to tell them apart.

What owners can safely look at

  1. Confirm the water shutoff valve is open and the visible supply line is not pinched.
  2. Look into the bin for ice that has clumped or fused, which suggests melting and refreezing.
  3. Notice whether the machine seems to be in a freeze, a release or an idle phase.
  4. Write down any message exactly as it reads.
  5. Photograph any water on the floor or on the cabinet front.

Avoid opening panels or chipping at ice with tools. If the machine has gone idle with a full bin, that may simply be the bin level working as intended.

Messages and what they report

Ice machine controls use words and numbers. Time to Clean signals that the water circulation system needs cleaning, Evap T Open reports an open evaporator thermistor circuit, and 12 indicates low water level. Because some codes differ by generation, we check the platform first.

The visit

We confirm the model, then work through water fill, freeze timing, ice release, temperature sensing and control, and refrigeration performance. The estimate is in writing and work starts only after you approve it. For clear ice at the same width see the HCL115; the U-Line ice makers page explains the categories.
