U-Line Refrigerators: Undercounter, ADA, Outdoor and Combination Models

U-Line refrigerators share a compact built-in shape but differ widely in width, collection, control and rating. This guide sorts out the lineup, shows where to read your model label and lists the problems owners report most.

At a glance

Overview

The lineup by width

The quickest way to place a U-Line refrigerator is by how wide its opening is. The catalog is organized around a handful of cabinet sizes, and each size has a typical home.

WidthTypical useExample models
15 inchesNarrow gaps beside an island sink or barURRE415, HRE515, ORE115
18 inchesSmall kitchens and pantriesURRE418, HRE518
21 inchesADA-height installations29R
24 inchesThe standard undercounter sizeURRE424, HRE524, ORE124
36 inchesWide bars and entertaining spaces3036RR, 3036RRGL

Those numbers are nominal cabinet widths. The height and depth depend on the collection, and a unit that looks the same as its neighbor may be from a different one, with different controls behind the grille.

Collections you may meet

Home and Seamless refrigerators in 15, 18 and 24 inches are listed for indoor and outdoor placement, while 5 Class and 3000 Series cabinets are indoor models. The Outdoor collection is built for outdoors specifically, and ADA models meet accessible-height installations. The 1 Class line mixes several product types, which matters below.

Refrigerators that are also something else

Two combination cabinets can fool people because they look like an ordinary refrigerator from the front. The 24-inch HRF124 has a refrigerator and a freezer section, and the HRI124, along with the 21-inch ADA ARI121 and Marine MRI121, pair a refrigerator with an ice maker. When something fails on those, record cooling and the second function separately.

Built-in or freestanding

Most U-Line refrigerators are designed to slide under a counter and breathe through a front grille. That means the finished cabinetry around them, the toe-kick and any panel add to the airflow story. A unit installed as a freestanding appliance in a pantry or garage has a different set of clearances, and the installation instructions for the model decide what is acceptable, not the appearance of the cabinet.

What owners report

  • The cabinet runs warm or creeps up through the afternoon.
  • It runs too cold and freezes lettuce or drinks at the back.
  • The compressor or fan runs for long periods.
  • Frost appears on the interior wall or around the door.
  • A door alert or temperature alert appears on the display.
  • The gasket looks loose, cracked or stays dirty.

The deeper causes are covered on U-Line refrigerator repair.

Where the model and serial number are

Look at the data label inside the cabinet, often on a side wall or near the top. Photograph the whole label rather than copying it by hand, because the full production string can show finish, voltage and pump configuration. Do not pull the unit from its opening to look for it; if you cannot see the label with the door open, say so when you call.

Codes related to refrigerators

A few of the most common messages are worth knowing by sight. dr is a door left open or a door-seal alert, and No Comm means the display and main board have lost communication. E5 and E6 flag a cabinet that has strayed more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit hot or cold from its setting for twelve hours or longer, and E11 refers to a memory error on applicable platforms. Match the code to the model before acting on it, and look up the rest in the U-Line error codes archive.

Safe things to do first

Close the door properly, clear the grille, confirm power, and photograph the display. Anything deeper belongs to a technician. If the unit is plugged in but dead, a GFCI outlet that has tripped is the common reason.
